In July 2008, when torrential rains overcame western Ukraine, causing a raging flood, Caritas Ukraine engaged in their work without delay. Within a week after the National Office of Caritas Ukraine received the first information on damages from its regional organizations situated on flooded territories, an appeal for assistance was sent to the Central Office of Caritas Internationalis in the Vatican. The appeal consisted of a plan of measures to provide immediate and urgent aid to flood victims: how to finance, purchase, deliver and distribute assistance. Additionally, local Caritas organizations carried out a campaign among their communities aimed at gathering food, clothes, and footwear for the flood victims.
Learning from the experience of former projects on providing assistance to victims of natural disasters, as in the floods in the TransCarpathia and Ukrainian-Hungarian border in 1998–1999 and 2001, Caritas Ukraine centrally organized the purchase of humanitarian aid based on tender, and then forwarded the aid to its regional representative offices, who in turn distributed the aid in the immediate regions directly to the victims. Caritas Ukraine provided aid for more than 1,000 victim families amounting to 388.500.00 Euros.
One of the priority topics for Caritas-Ukraine is providing help for women who appeared in unfavourable life situations. For example in Kyiv there is a Center for training of hairdressers, in Sokal there is a shelter for single minors-mothers and girls – victims of violence. |
